Welcome back to Invitation Printing 101. Today we’re discussing my personal favorite — letterpress! The Basics First Look: • Indented impression • Matte ink • Usually printed on a textured cotton paper It’s great for: • Everything from classic to whimsical styles • Weddings, holiday cards, baby announcements, the list goes on…. • Designs with one, two or three ink colors It’s often combined with: • Foil details • Thick paper • Envelope liners Details There’s something about this antique printing process that I just adore. Letterpress printing uses plates to create an indented impression, leaving you with a beautifully textured surface on your invitation. This week we’re showcasing a few of our favorite engraved designs from Arzberger, an invitation design and print studio that exudes traditional, southern charm. If you aren’t familiar with the process of engraving, here’s how the pros at Arzberger describe it… Engraving is an art which has endured for centuries because of its singular appearance and lasting impression. An engraved piece requires a metal plate that has been etched with copy or other artwork. The plate is carefully positioned in the engraving press, and the fountain is filled with ink. Before each stamping, ink is spread over the die and quickly wiped off, leaving only the etched …
