Invitation Printing 101 – Letterpress

Welcome back to Invitation Printing 101. Today we’re discussing my personal favorite — letterpress! The Basics First Look: • Indented impression • Matte ink • Usually printed on a textured cotton paper It’s great for: • Everything from classic to whimsical styles • Weddings, holiday cards, baby announcements, the list goes on…. • Designs with one, two or three ink colors It’s often combined with: • Foil details • Thick paper • Envelope liners Details There’s something about this antique printing process that I just adore. Letterpress printing uses plates to create an indented impression, leaving you with a beautifully textured surface on your invitation. The inks are translucent and soak into the paper so we recommend working with light-colored papers like …

Thermography Wedding Invitations – Invitation Printing 101

Welcome back to Invitation Printing 101! Today we’re discussing Thermography ink. My last post discussed flat, digital printing so now we’re stepping into the world of texture with this raised ink option in Thermography wedding invitations. The Basics of Thermography Printing First Look: • Raised ink • Glossy, slightly rubbery texture • Usually printed on a smooth matte or metallic paper It’s great for: • Traditional weddings • Classic styles • Designs with one or two ink colors It’s often combined with: • Embossed borders • Backing layers • Pockets Details and Samples Thermography is created by dusting a resin-like powder over a special ink. Next, the invitation is heated causing the powder to create a raised, slightly rubbery effect upon drying. Since the …

Part 2: Keeping It All Together – Pockets and Bellybands

Welcome to Part 2: Keeping it all together. Today we’re going to focus on a couple more Fat Cat favorites — pockets and bellybands. But before we dive in, if you missed last week’s post make sure to catch up here. Bellybands This is another personal favorite. A bellyband is a piece of paper that wraps around the invitation. The rest of the suite (reply set, reception card and detail card) can be tucked under the bellyband either in front of or behind the invitation. Bellybands can be printed or unprinted on either textured or smooth paper. They can even be layered with twine or a ribbon. Pockets Pockets come is so many shapes and sizes (some of which we discussed …

Adding an Envelope Liner: Round 1

One of our favorite ways to spice up a classic invitation is to add a beautiful envelope liner. There are so many styles and options to choose from… patterned or solid, shimmer or matte, classic or whimsical. This week and next I’m going to show off some of our favorites starting with FOIL liners! We began offering foil liners a couple years ago and haven’t turned back. They add an extra special shimmering touch to classic and whimsical invitations alike. Next up we have brushstroke and watercolor liners. These artistic envelope liners add a sense of whimsy and are perfect for everything from wedding invitations to baby announcements. Today we’ll end with photographs and maps. These details really add a personal …

Real Wedding: Elena and John

Designing the paper elements for Elena and John’s dream wedding was an absolute joy. Their style was classic and elegant with a hint of Gatsby inspired, art deco flair. In our first appointment, Elena’s sketch of a ribbon and wax seal evolved into a beautiful foil and letterpress invitation. Once they were designed and printed, we carefully wrapped each one with a ribbon and added a shimmery wax seal. We’re still so in love with the finished suite. Once the invitations were in the mail, we created monogrammed wedding programs and champagne flute escort cards. Festive gold menus sat at each place setting to compliment the beautiful table numbers that Elena stitched by hand. Here are some of our favorite …

Chatsworth by Bella Figura, 2017 Calligraphy Trend, Letterpress and Foil Invitation with Floral Liner

2017: New Year, New Trends

Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are ready for all the great things ahead in 2017. With a new year comes new trends and we’re so excited to dive into them in this week’s blog post…. Pops of Color In 2017 we expect to see classic invitations with unexpected pops of color. This can be achieved by adding a purple edge paint to Smock’s “Avella” suite or a vibrant envelope liner as shown in “Ellory.” Greenery We love that we continue to see garlands and other greenery used as table runners and centerpieces. Organic, “fresh-picked” style bouquets are taking place of traditional blooms. This invitation by B.T.Elements uses kraft paper and hints of greenery, perfect for an …

Melissa + Michael | Wedding Invitation, Letterpress with Metallic Bellyband

Celebrating Autumn Favorites

Happy November Everyone! This seems like the perfect time to pause and celebrate some of our favorite autumn couples — and show off their gorgeous invitations of course!   Diana + Jeremy This one is just SO pretty! Super thick paper coupled with this stunning floral liner make this the perfect compliment for Diana and Jeremy’s wedding at the New York Botanical Garden.   Melissa + Michael Seriously, one of the cutest couples we met all season. Organized Melissa came in with powerpoint notes explaining her invitation must-haves (and absolutely-nots too). This traditional invitation with monogrammed bellyband was exactly what they had in mind. The perfect match for their Flowerfield wedding.   Kristen + Tyler It was an absolute pleasure working with …

Formal Wedding Style

Formal weddings are all about the combination of sophisticated style with glamorous details. In the invitation world this translates to calligraphy, beveled edges and foil stamping. Sutherlin by Smock This deco inspired invitation is a stunner! Patterned, foil back printing will certainly catch your guests’ attention. We also love the idea of saying “thank you” with a gold-foiled, photo notecard. Kensington by Dauphine Press …

Charlotte by Bella Figura | Diecut Thank you note

Don’t forget to say Thank You

After your event, it’s always important to send thoughtful, handwritten thank you notes to your guests. Your guests spent a lot of time and energy traveling to your event and choosing a gift for you so the best way to express your gratitude is with a sweet little note. Remember, this is the last interaction your guests will have with your wedding so have fun with it. Your thank you notes are the final piece of the puzzle and one more way to put your personal touch on your event. We love using similar fonts, colors or even a photo from the big day to tie everything together. We recommend mailing them up to three months after your event; however, …

2015 Favorites: Part 2

Just in case you missed last week’s post, we’re reminiscing about some of our favorite designs from this past year. Here’s “Part 2” of our most-loved wedding and party invitations from 2015… Katie and Rich Of course I had to sneak this in here! What kind of designer would I be if I didn’t love my own wedding invitation and save the date?!? —- Laura and Andrew I just love this in-progress shot of Laura and Andrew’s wax sealed invitations. These were eventually slipped into clear bags so that their guests saw this beautiful wax seal as soon as they opened their mail box. We think first impressions are so important and these invitations certainly make a memorable one! —- Natalie …
